We often hear the "Why learn languages?" cry when people rely on English as being one of the current international languages. However, one must be careful in setting presumpions about the prowess of English in the world's eyes, especially when you are not on your own home turf (WARNING: this makes uncomfortable watching):

Not uncomfortable just clearly demonstrating why we should not just teach to pass the exmas in MFL and very brave of Guido Westerwelle to stick to his principles in such a polite (very English - esp when inviting the reporter to a cup of tea to have a chat in English)way.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't help cringing for the BBC reporter as he got "burned" so one of my pupils put today. However, as you say, he definately shows cultural awareness from the English point of view. A valuable lesson for our students.
